The snivellin’, grovellin’, measly, weasely House Republicans just fired Liz Cheney from leadership for the crime of speaking a truth that their mad king won’t abide.
You will hear lots of spin and BS and face-saving about all the reasons why this had to happen. How it was about Liz’s personality or the fact that she’s a neocon or her failures at message discipline.
All of that is a performance attempting to elide the basic fact that she’s gone because she wouldn’t continue to humor Donald Trump’s deadly lies about the election.
It is depressing that this is what I have come to expect from my erstwhile friends.
This behavior isn’t anything new. It is just the latest cowardly act in a long line of cowardly acts taken by people who were my colleagues, my happy hour pals, my teammates.
In a vacuum it would be enough to make you want to take a long walk off a short pier.
But I got lucky.
My disappointment in them continues to be counteracted by how inspired I am by my colleagues at The Bulwark . . . and all of you who have supported us.
Among the wonderful things about The Bulwark is that we don’t have to humor anyone, least of all the mango man-baby of Mar-a-Lago.
We don’t have to contort every picture so that it makes our team look good.
We can speak the truth without fear of the purge.
We can look at what is happening with clear eyes.
And because we were once in league with those who are now trying to dismantle our democracy, we have a special insight into actions that might sometimes seem inexplicable.
I don’t hold any special regard for Liz Cheney. She was never my favorite House Republican, even when I was a Republican.
But I’m grateful that she has helped expose something that we at The Bulwark have been telling you was the case for a while now.
Trump’s exile has not ended the fight for our democracy. The disinformation and hatred he wrought have not dissipated because he’s been reduced to Mar-a-Lago’s wedding singer MC.
We need to stay vigilant. And continue speaking the truth. That’s what The Bulwark is about. Hopefully we can entertain you some along the way.
